Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam Technical University runs on a 10-point Choice Based Credit System that governs grades for over 400,000 students across 800 affiliated colleges in Uttar Pradesh. Before you calculate your SGPA, YGPA, or CGPA, you need the right formula – and at gpatoopercentage.com, we’ve built every AKTU conversion into one free tool so no student submits the wrong percentage on a job application again.

AKTU Conversion and Grading System

What Is AKTU and Which Colleges Does It Regulate?

AKTU (Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam Technical University), formerly known as UPTU (Uttar Pradesh Technical University), is a public affiliating university established in Lucknow on 8 May 2000. It affiliates approximately 800 colleges across Uttar Pradesh, covering B.Tech, B.Arch, MBA, MCA, and B.Pharma programs. It holds NAAC ‘A’ grade accreditation and operates under dual approval from UGC and AICTE.

AKTU does not teach students directly. It sets examination standards, conducts semester exams for all affiliated colleges, and declares results through the AKTU One View portal. Admissions happen through JEE Main and UPTAC counselling, with top recruiters including TCS, Wipro, Capgemini, and Cognizant visiting affiliated campuses each placement season.

The university adopted the Choice Based Credit System (CBCS) from the 2016-17 academic session, aligning its grading framework with UGC guidelines. This change introduced the 10-point grading scale that every AKTU student uses today. That scale is the foundation for every SGPA, YGPA, and CGPA calculation across all 8 semesters of a B.Tech program.

What Is the AKTU 10-Point Grading Scale?

The AKTU 10-point grading scale maps percentage marks to letter grades and grade points. O (Outstanding) sits at the top with 10 grade points for 90%-100%, while P (Pass) at the bottom carries 4 grade points for 40%-44.9%. Any score below 40% earns an F with 0 grade points and registers as a backlog.

Non-credit courses (mandatory but ungraded activities like NSS, NCC, and yoga) receive Satisfactory (S) or Unsatisfactory (U) results. These do not enter any SGPA or CGPA calculation. The grade points from the table above feed directly into AKTU’s SGPA formula each semester.

How Is SGPA Calculated in AKTU?

SGPA in AKTU is the credit-weighted average of grade points earned across all courses in a single semester. The formula multiplies each course’s grade point by its credit hours, adds those values together, then divides by total credits in that semester. AKTU computes SGPA to exactly two decimal places.

The official AKTU SGPA formula:

SGPA = Σ(Ci × Gi) ÷ ΣCi

Where:

  • Ci = credit hours assigned to course i
  • Gi = grade point earned in course i

Worked example for Semester 1:

Total credits: 15 Total (Ci × Gi): 116

SGPA = 116 ÷ 15 = 7.73

Now see the impact when a student fails the 4-credit Programming course (F = 0 grade points):

Total (Ci × Gi) drops to: 36 + 24 + 0 + 18 + 10 = 88

SGPA = 88 ÷ 15 = 5.87

One failed 4-credit subject drops SGPA by 1.86 points. The failed course stays in the denominator but contributes zero to the numerator. This is why high-credit core subjects carry disproportionate weight on your semester average.

AKTU uses SGPA to compute another metric most universities skip entirely: YGPA.

What Is YGPA in AKTU and How Is It Calculated?

YGPA (Yearly Grade Point Average) is unique to AKTU. It combines the SGPA of both semesters in an academic year into a single weighted average. YGPA determines year-wise academic standing and feeds into promotion decisions alongside CGPA. No other major Indian technical university uses this metric by name.

The official AKTU YGPA formula:

YGPA = (SGPA1 × C1 + SGPA2 × C2) ÷ (C1 + C2)

Where:

  • SGPA1 = SGPA of Semester 1, C1 = total credits in Semester 1
  • SGPA2 = SGPA of Semester 2, C2 = total credits in Semester 2

Worked example for Year 1:

Semester

SGPA

Credits

Semester 1

7.73

15

Semester 2

8.20

17

YGPA = (7.73 × 15 + 8.20 × 17) ÷ (15 + 17) YGPA = (115.95 + 139.40) ÷ 32 YGPA = 255.35 ÷ 32 = 7.98

Notice that Semester 2 carries more weight because it has 17 credits against Semester 1’s 15. A stronger second semester always pulls your YGPA upward more than an equally strong first semester. YGPA connects directly to the 24-credit promotion rule, which decides whether you advance to Year 2 or face a year back.

How Is CGPA Calculated in AKTU Across All Semesters?

CGPA in AKTU is the credit-weighted average of SGPA scores across every completed semester. It accumulates from Semester 1 through Semester 8 and represents your overall B.Tech performance. AKTU requires a minimum CGPA of 5.0 at the end of your program to award the degree.

The official AKTU CGPA formula:

CGPA = Σ(Ci × Si) ÷ ΣCi

Where:

  • Ci = total credits in semester i
  • Si = SGPA earned in semester i

Worked example across three semesters:

Semester

Credits (Ci)

SGPA (Si)

Ci × Si

Semester 1

15

7.73

115.95

Semester 2

17

8.20

139.40

Semester 3

16

7.50

120.00

Total credits: 48 Total (Ci × Si): 375.35

CGPA = 375.35 ÷ 48 = 7.82

The single most common AKTU calculation mistake: averaging the three SGPAs directly (7.73 + 8.20 + 7.50 ÷ 3 = 7.81). That looks close here, but across 8 semesters with varying credit loads ranging from 15 to 26, direct averaging produces a CGPA that does not match your official AKTU marksheet. Always use the credit-weighted formula above, or run your figures through the CGPA calculator to get the correct output instantly.

Once you have your CGPA, the next calculation most AKTU students get wrong is the percentage conversion, because AKTU uses two different formulas depending on your admission batch.

How Do You Convert AKTU CGPA to Percentage?

AKTU CGPA to percentage conversion depends on your admission batch. Students admitted up to 2017-18 use Percentage = CGPA × 10. Students admitted from 2018-19 onwards use Percentage = (CGPA – 0.75) × 10. Applying the wrong formula is the most frequent error AKTU students make on job applications and scholarship forms.

Here is the batch-wise breakdown:

Admission Batch

Formula

Up to 2017-18

CGPA × 10

80.0%

2018-19 onwards

(CGPA – 0.75) × 10

72.5%

The 2018-19 formula subtracts 0.75 before multiplying because AKTU shifted its grade-point baseline under the revised CBCS ordinance. The result: a student with 8.0 CGPA from the 2018-19 batch gets 72.5%, while a student with identical grades from the 2017-18 batch gets 80.0%. That 7.5-percentage-point gap can decide eligibility for a government job requiring 75%.

Your admission batch appears on your AKTU One View marksheet header. Verify it before calculating. For reverse conversion, the percentage to CGPA calculator applies the correct batch formula automatically when you select AKTU.

What Degree Classification Does Your AKTU CGPA Earn?

AKTU classifies B.Tech degrees into three divisions based on final CGPA. First Division with Honours requires 8.5 CGPA with no backlogs and no grace marks throughout the entire program. First Division requires 6.5 to 8.49 CGPA. Second Division covers 5.0 to 6.49 CGPA.

6.5 – 8.49

None beyond CGPA threshold

Second Division

5.0 – 6.49

The Honours condition trips up many students. A student who used grace marks to pass one paper in Semester 3, even if they later achieve 8.7 CGPA, does not qualify for First Division with Honours. Grace marks disqualify Honours eligibility permanently, regardless of final CGPA. AKTU permits a maximum of 7 grace marks per academic year, but using them closes the Honours track for that student. The percentage classification glossary page covers how classification systems work across Indian universities in more detail.

What Are the Passing Criteria and Promotion Rules in AKTU?

AKTU passing criteria require two conditions to be met simultaneously for every theory subject. You must score at least 21 out of 70 marks (30%) in the end-semester external exam alone, and your combined internal plus external total must reach at least 40 out of 100 marks (40%). Failing either condition registers a backlog regardless of your other scores.

The evaluation split for a standard theory subject:

  • External end-semester exam: 70 marks (minimum 21 required)
  • Internal sessionals: 30 marks (mid-terms, assignments, quizzes)
  • Combined minimum: 40 out of 100

For practical and lab subjects, the passing threshold shifts to 50% of total marks. There is no separate internal/external split condition for practicals.

The 24-credit promotion rule governs year advancement. To move from Year 1 to Year 2, a student must earn at least 24 credits across Semesters 1 and 2 combined. Missing this threshold results in a Year Back (YB), blocking registration for Year 2 until the credit shortfall is cleared. AKTU allows a maximum of 7 grace marks per academic year to help borderline cases cross the 40% aggregate line, but grace marks used at any point remove Honours track eligibility permanently.

Understanding the credit system in Indian universities helps clarify how credit hours translate into promotion eligibility across CBCS-based programs like AKTU.

What CGPA Do You Need for Placements at AKTU Colleges?

Most campus placement drives at AKTU-affiliated colleges set a minimum CGPA cutoff of 6.0 to 7.5. Mass recruiters like TCS, Wipro, and Capgemini typically require 6.0 CGPA (approximately 52.5% under the 2018-19 formula). Product-based and higher-paying companies set thresholds at 7.0 to 7.5 CGPA.

Batch-specific

For government job applications and PSU recruitment forms, always use the percentage from AKTU’s official batch-specific formula – not a generic multiplier. APPSC, UPSC, and central PSU forms ask for percentage from official marksheets. A self-calculated figure using the wrong formula can disqualify an otherwise eligible candidate. Use the SGPA to CGPA calculator to aggregate your semester scores first, then convert with the batch-correct formula.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the most common AKTU CGPA calculation mistake?

Averaging SGPA values directly without weighting by semester credits. If Semester 1 has 15 credits and Semester 4 has 22 credits, those semesters carry different weights in the final CGPA. Simple averaging produces a figure that does not match your official AKTU transcript.

Does a 10.0 CGPA convert to 100% in AKTU?

No. Under the 2018-19 onwards formula, 10.0 CGPA converts to (10.0 – 0.75) × 10 = 92.5%. Under the older pre-2018 formula, 10.0 CGPA converts to 100%. Always identify your admission batch before reporting a percentage figure.

Does clearing a backlog restore Honours eligibility?

No. AKTU’s First Division with Honours requires no backlogs at any point in the entire program duration. Clearing a backlog in a supplementary exam improves CGPA but does not restore Honours eligibility. The track closes the moment a backlog is registered.

Do grace marks affect degree classification?

Yes. AKTU allows up to 7 grace marks per academic year, but any student who uses grace marks becomes ineligible for First Division with Honours, regardless of final CGPA. Grace marks used in any semester close the Honours track permanently.

Does the AKTU grading scale apply equally to B.Tech, M.Tech, and MBA?

Yes. AKTU’s 10-point CBCS framework and the same O/A+/A/B+/B/C/P/F grade table apply across B.Tech, M.Tech, and MBA programs at all affiliated institutions. Credit loads and subject structures differ by program, but the grade point assignments and SGPA/CGPA formulas remain identical.
