Multiplying Factor in CGPA to Percentage Conversion

The multiplying factor converts CGPA to percentage by multiplying the cumulative score by a fixed number set by each institution. CBSE uses 9.5, so a student with 8.0 CGPA gets 76% (8.0 × 9.5 = 76).

Each university sets its own multiplier based on historical grade distribution data. CBSE fixed 9.5 after analysing five years of board exam results. SPPU uses 8.14 for its 10-point scale. VTU and GTU apply different multipliers again. No single universal factor exists across Indian institutions.

The multiplier gets determined by reverse-mapping percentage scores to CGPA across large student datasets. Universities calculate the average ratio between percentage and CGPA for thousands of students, then round to a standard factor. That’s why the number shifts from one grading system to another.

Using the wrong multiplier produces incorrect percentages on applications. Students should always verify their institution-specific conversion formula before submitting scores to employers or graduate programs.
