Percentage Classification – First Class, Distinction
Percentage classification groups academic scores into ranked bands that universities print on transcripts and degree certificates. Distinction starts above 75%, First Class covers 60-75%, and Second Class spans 50-60% in most Indian university systems.
Standard Indian classification follows this structure: Distinction (75%+), First Class (60-74.9%), Second Class (50-59.9%), Pass Class (40-49.9%). Some institutions like VTU set Distinction at 70% instead of 75%, so cutoffs vary by university.
These bands matter for three reasons. Employers filter resumes by classification tier. Government exams set minimum class requirements for eligibility. And graduate programs abroad often convert Indian percentages to GPA equivalents using these bands as reference points.
Students converting CGPA to percentage through GTU’s formula should check which classification band their converted score falls into before listing it on applications.
