SGPA – Semester Grade Point Average

SGPA stands for Semester Grade Point Average. It measures a student’s academic performance for a single semester by dividing total weighted grade points by total credit hours attempted in that term.

SGPA follows a credit-weighted calculation: each course’s grade point multiplies by its credit hours. The sum of those products divides by the semester’s total credits. Courses with higher credit loads carry more weight in the final SGPA score.

SGPA converts to CGPA through accumulation. Each semester’s SGPA feeds into the cumulative calculation as new credit hours and grade points stack on previous totals. CGPA recalculates after every semester closes.

Some Indian universities label SGPA as SPI (Semester Performance Index), but the formula stays identical.
