CGPA – Cumulative Grade Point Average

CGPA stands for Cumulative Grade Point Average. It represents a student’s weighted academic score across all completed semesters, calculated by dividing total earned grade points by total credit hours attempted.

CGPA uses a simple formula: multiply each course’s grade point by its credit hours, sum the results, then divide by total credits. It updates every semester as new grades feed into the cumulative total.

Two scales dominate globally. The 4-point scale caps at 4.0 (US, Canada). The 10-point scale caps at 10.0 (India, CBSE). A 3.5/4.0 and 8.5/10.0 signal similar academic strength.

Most universities use CGPA for honors eligibility, graduate admissions, and employer screening.
